Statement from CareMessage’s Founders
Dear CareMessage Team, Supporters, Partners and Friends,
We want to take the opportunity to restate what guides the work of our organization and our people-related initiatives.
We are an organization created to advance health equity for low-income populations through increasing access to care, improving clinical outcomes, and addressing social drivers of health. Why? Because although our country spends more than any other developed economy on healthcare, we still have worse outcomes. In particular, low-income populations in the United States live 10-15 years less than higher income populations, and the leading causes of death are preventable and avoidable such as cancer and heart disease. Those who are living longer are not necessarily healthier either, with a high percentage living with permanent chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
A Fair Chance to be Healthy
We believe in a world where all people have a fair chance to be healthy, and we think we can create it by:
- Strengthening access to our primary care system: Primary care affords the best chance within our existing healthcare system to prevent and effectively manage our leading causes of mortality, rather than waiting to treat their long-term consequences, often when it is too late.
- Improving outcomes through scaling prevention methods: This includes improved nutrition, physical activity, and wellness practices amongst entire populations in a way that facilitates behavior change tailored to their unique circumstances.
- Addressing non-medical needs to improve effectiveness: In collaboration with countless organizations who have similar missions to improve our communities, we can connect people to resources and information to help increase access to basic needs that are intimately tied to long-term health outcomes.
A Fair Chance to Contribute to CareMessage
After more than a decade since we started this work, we can say with a high level of certainty that our success is solely attributed to the people behind our work. Each member of our team has their own unique motivation and lived experience, but they show up every day with a shared vision for leaving this world a bit better than we found it. Together, we have found solutions that have proven outcomes like increased cancer screenings, reduced A1c’s, and increased physical activity for millions of low-income people across the United States.
Our Values
As founders, our values have been foundational to the organization we have built. These values influence how we treat partners, employees, and others, and they will continue to be the underlying heartbeat of CareMessage. As such, it has been our belief from the beginning that creating a fair opportunity for all employees to succeed is the right thing to do. This mirrors our organization’s mission and belief in creating a fair chance for everyone to be healthy. This belief in fairness has guided a variety of policies and practices, and that belief will not change. Our values of Collaboration, Authenticity, Results, and Empathy (CARE) remain the same as described below:
- Collaboration - We want CareMessage to be a place where everyone feels valued and supported. A collaborative environment where we can work through differences toward common measurable results is the way we come together.
- Authenticity - We want everyone to show up authentically through transparency, honesty, and integrity. This is how we can create an environment where everyone is empowered to do the most meaningful work of their career no matter how they got here.
- Results - We are ultimately here to improve healthcare, and we want to continue to raise that bar for what that means.
- Empathy - For the type of work we do, empathy is critical. Empathy is “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another,” and while we may never share the same lived experiences, we believe a team made up of people with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives helps us all grow as people to build better solutions to complex healthcare problems. No matter where you come from or what you believe, you are welcome here.
Now more than ever our work and approach matters. We will continue to build a workplace that reflects our values, and we will remain committed to doing what’s right, not just because it's expected, but because it’s who we are.
